While working up in Burksville, KY we found a unique place to eat. It quickly became our favoite place to eat lunch in town. This story tells the story about the Cafe. The segment starts and 10:05 and I am in there at the very end when Heather is bringing our table some ice cream. I will miss Chef David and Heather Click Here to watch the KY Life Segment on Annie Ruby’s Cafe. If you are ever up that way I recommend going there. The food is great and the antiques on display take you back to the old days. They even used to bottle Coca Cola in the basement in the early days.

We can’t believe it either. Tyler was fortunate to get a scholarship to Berea College. He also received a scholarship from the Dade County Chamber of Commerce. Thank you Doris Polari. Tyler also received an award for AP English. Tyler will be working at Camp Lookout this summer.

Well, I guess I can say simply this is a space to express myself personally. On this blog I will try and keep topics mostly about enology, viticulture and a little life and politics along the way. As many of you know I have gone back to school for enology and viticulture. A little unsure of whether I want to start a winery or just grow grapes I will share some of the knowledge I acquire along the way. I will try to keep my post down to once a week so we can have some fresh interesting content. Every once in a while I may go off on something that impresses me or drives me nuts. We will try and keep it fun.

Enology

What is it? Summed up it is the science of making wine. i will use this subject matter for everything associated with making the wine from crushing to tasting. We will cover topics from mousiness, TA, corking, enclosures, barrel programs, down to pressure washers. I will try to keep the topics more focused on a consumer level. We will just see where that goes.

Viticulture

Here we will dwell in the science of growing grapes. I will try and emphasis my experience as I begin my vineyard in Northwest Georgia. We will talk about diseases, degree days, pest, trellis systems, pruning, canopy management, some farm talk ranging from equipment to other interesting facts. I will explain the differences between biodynamic and organic vineyards. We might even talk about animal pest and farm dogs and cats. So ride with us as we create foreveryoung vineyards.

Other fun stuff

Well my close friends know that besides making wine i love to cook especially grilling. I will touch on some of my favorite recipes or other places off the beaten path that impress me. We might talk about the Chattanooga Market, A neat meat market in Middle TN, A little politics. I promise to try and keep the politics down. Some of you may know I got to spend a week at Erlanger Hospital . For those who don’t. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease . What happened is that I passed out at work at about 2:00 at work. I had lost a lot of blood. My co-workers were great. They immediately called 911. I can’t remember much of what happened as I was in a fog. I do know it scared me. I am 39 and still feel like I am 25. I have never had any serious medical problems before. Thank you’s to all of my co-workers. I still wasn’t sure what was happening. I knew I couldn’t drive and wished my co-workers weren’t making such a big fuss. I didn’t realize I had lost a lot more blood when I passed out. I a needle stuck in the left arm and one in the right courtesy of Hamilton County EMS. They were great.

Emergency Room

Next we arrived at the emergency room. I still felt dizzy like I was going to pass out. I lost some more blood. When I say loosing blood I mean it is coming out my intestine, bright red, and felt like 2 gallons not to be gross but like diarrhea. It was involuntary. After giving me some nexium through the IV they told me I was going to be admitted to the Cardiac Care Unit(CCU). I started crying. What were they not telling me? It turns out the anytime a person has so much intestinal bleeding that’s where you go. You could turn from good to bad if the intestines are leaking out into the body cavity. After a little bit longer we got to go up. This whole time my wife, Angela was with me.

So there I am in the emergency room scared as hell. I am sorry, I am superman, I learned from gentleman jack. Any of you heard of hooters before. Sorry, that’s who sponsored a lot of parties at my high school so I am a little partial. I am pissed that I have grey hair and even more that I have to shave my ears. Back to the story. Oh yeh up above thats my GI Doc.

IN CCU

Well my time in here is good. They nurses were hot except for Josh. Sorry dude I am not gay. But you were the greatest.  The only one I remember(damn meds). There was one that worked with you that stuck the hell out of my arm but she had a cool ear-ring good beach story and I bet could dance. I will show you all how to run soon. Thanks for taking care of me when I was there. One day I may return the favor back stage.

Getting out

Then I went to another floor. One nurse shaved me. Don’t worry girls only on the face. She was great. She had the greatest southern accent and shaved a nervous person. Plus all she bragged on was her husband and I thought that was cool. Then they let me out. I was so glad. I don’t know much about this thing but I will good night you all. So now I am taking a handful of pills and wished I was back on Sebastian Inlet shootin the pier  but up here we will not see the Hose  Classic.

The Capdevila Family emigrated from Cuba to the United States in 1962 on the Freedom Flights to Miami, Florida. Maximino and Coralia fled Cuba wanting a better life for their boys after Fidel Castro and communism took over. Even though they did not know the language and they did not have any resources, they knew that if they worked hard they could achieve the American dream. Maximino and Coralia decided to settle in Tampa along with their four boys, Jorge, Luis, Albert, and Maxi, Jr.

Maximino worked eleven years for The Acme Plating Company where he gained the respect of his fellow employees and supervisors. He became the foreman of the company and worked there until a tragic death of a brother in law that die at the company under Max watch. He then left to open his own business. Coralia had worked many long hours and many years at The Tropical Garment Company as a seamstress before she too took on the challenge of a new business with her husband. The two older boys, Jorge and Luis, started working at the age of 9 and 7 selling hot Cuban corn tamales on their bicycles on the streets of Tampa on the weekends, and soon Albert and Maxi followed. Three years later, the boys graduated to their uncle’s meat market. The boys worked weekends and summers for many years until their parents bought their first business “La Teresita Grocery.”

The grocery store was bought with a small down payment and a loan from the Small Business Administration in 1972. Maximino and Coralia, along with their four boys and faith in God, went on to work together to make their American dream a reality. Success came with a big price: they worked from seven in the morning to eleven at night, three hundred and sixty five days a year; year in and year out.

The small grocery store became a supermarket, fish & meat market and a small Coffee & Sandwich Shop with a large customer base. Soon, the restaurant seating was not large enough to meet the customer demand. The family made the decision to buy the Philip 66 gas station across the street on the corner of Lincoln and Columbus Drive. They remodeled and moved the Coffee & Sandwich Shop to the new location with 3 horseshoe-shaped countertops with seating for 50.  It was there that the small restaurant/cafeteria became a landmark and continued to evolve into the popular hot spot from breakfast to late night, serving café con leche, Cuban sandwiches, soups to delicious homemade cooked meals. The demands of the restaurant and its popularity required more attention and Maximino & Coralia decided in 1985 to sell the grocery store. La Teresita continued to flourish being visited by hundreds daily.

In 1993, the Capdevila family once again endeavored on a new project, another dream: a 14,000 square foot, two-story restaurant on properties they had previously purchased next to the existing cafeteria. The new building now holds a sit-down restaurant (Capdevila’s at La Teresita) with tables and booths on the east side of the building, the cafeteria with the horseshoe-shaped counters on the west side and  takeout area, a banquet hall on the 2^nd floor. The new project with the Lord’s help became a great success and the Capdevila family has continue to served this community and people from all over the world with great food, reasonable prices, huge portion’s along with a great family atmosphere. La Teresita now serves thousands weekly and has been honored to host and serve Presidents of the United States, governors, senators, mayors, city workers, and peoples and cultures from all walks of life. Graves comes out swinging against Hawkins; shows Hawkins altered court documents as part of campaign attack

Hawkins’ Email Proves He Altered a Document and Failed to Disclose Frivolous Suits Against Graves Were Canceled or Dismissed

“This is just another attack in Lee Hawkins’ political career that proves he will say and do anything to get elected.”

(RANGER, GA) – Unable to stop his campaign from crumbling Lee Hawkins today continued his false, negative personal attacks against conservative Republican Tom Graves.

On Thursday, Hawkins sent a false mailer to voters saying Graves had a “JUDGEMENT” to pay his bills and that he was “currently being sued.”

However, in the email released today by Hawkins it proves he altered court documents in attempt to cause harm to Graves’ campaign for Congress.

Hawkins selected partial copies of the papers to include on the mailers and in one instance he added a “JUDGEMENT” stamp on the court records. But in the documents released by Hawkins today nowhere does it show the “JUDGEMENT” stamp, proving it was added by Hawkins.

Hawkins also removed half of the document in the mailer, thus eliminating the official stamp from Gordon County Magistrate Court stating that the action had been cancelled.

In addition, Hawkins continues his false attack that Graves is currently being sued, but fails to provide the documentation showing the lawsuit had been dismissed nearly two years ago by the plaintiffs.

“In his own email, Lee Hawkins proves his negative mail piece is bogus,” said Tim Baker Graves Campaign Manger. “He added a “JUDGEMENT” stamp that was never on the official document and fails to show that both lawsuits had been cancelled or dismissed. Unable to advance his campaign on the issues, Lee Hawkins continues playing gutter politics by personally attacking Tom. I don’t see how any of these attacks demonstrate to the voters why they should elect Lee Hawkins.”

“This is just another attack in Lee Hawkins’ political career that proves he will say and do anything to get elected,” added Baker. “Desperate candidates do desperate things and Lee Hawkins is a desperate candidate trying to save his political career.”

Baker says North Georgia can take comfort in the fact they should only have another couple days to put up with Hawkins’ deceptions. “With Tom Graves, you get a genuine proven leader who has never met a tax cut he didn’t like, is as solid as a rock on the 2nd Amendment and will fight with ever fiber in his body to limit the role of government in our lives.”

They all also say they are small businessmen. I am sorry I don’t agree that these are all small businesses. It is just like we have said for a long time. People do not get active in organizations or more specifically government until it effects them personally. I do realize that Hawkins has been a State Senator for some time now. I guess if you ask 8 or nine other legislators to stay at a resort that cost over $400 a night disguised that they were speakers.

Calhoun, GA — As early voters have already discovered, about half of Gordon County must work its way through a confusing ballot in the special election to fill the 9th Congressional District seat that Rep. Nathan Deal, R-Gainesville, gave up to run for governor.

Seven North Georgians qualified to run for the seat, which represents a wide swath of the state, stretching across the top of the state from Alabama to South Carolina and includes the eastern half of Gordon County. Those candidates are Chris Cates of Blairsville, Tom Graves of Ranger, Lee Hawkins of Gainesville, Bert Loftman of Jasper, Eugene Moon of Gainesville, Bill Stephens of Cumming and Steve Tarvin of Chickamauga. All are Republicans except Moon, an independent, and the six Republicans will all meet again in the July 20 primary, along with Steve Brannon of Fairmount and Bobby Reese of Flowery Branch. Mike Freeman a Democrat from Gainesville, announced last month that he was withdrawing from the race, but his name will still be on the ballot. He did not qualify for the Democratic primary.

All of the announced candidates bring unique talents to the race, but as far as Gordon County’s interests are concerned, there is only one sensible choice — Tom Graves.

Graves, a Gordon County business owner, formerly represented state House District 12, which includes the eastern part of Gordon County and all of Pickens County. He has represented Gordon County since 2002 and has strong conservative credentials. He resigned his seat to run for the 9th District seat. In the past few months he has built a strong grassroots organization across the district.

In the past eight years, Graves has established himself as one of the leading conservative voices in Georgia. He founded and chaired the 216 Group, a conservative policy group of like-minded Georgia lawmakers who met to evaluate pending legislation based on conservative principles.  

The Ranger resident knows Gordon County, its citizens and their concerns well. And Gordon Countians know Graves, including his principled stand against former Georgia House Speaker Glenn Richardson, a stand that cost Graves several committee chairmanships and his post as one of Richardson’s “Hawks.”

He is a former member of the Gordon County Board of Elections, an active member of the Gordon County Chamber of Commerce, and he and his family attend Calhoun’s Belmont Baptist Church.
Graves has a strong grasp of the economic issues that are critical to Gordon County’s continued growth. His knowledge of this region and its communities of interest would be invaluable when the Georgia’s Congressional districts and state House and Senate districts are redrawn based on the results of the 2010 census.

With the number of candidates on the May 11 ballot, there is a good chance that a runoff will be required before the seat if filled. And of course, all of these candidates (and several others) have said they plan to run in the July primaries for the November general election.

However, it is our view that Tom Graves is the best choice for Gordon County in this crowded special election field.
